For Common Purpose
for Solo Violin
Premiere: Alexandra Conunova, soloist with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Music Hall, Cincinnati, OH, Oct. 17 & 18, 2026
PROGRAM NOTES
For Common Purpose builds on Aaron Copeland’s Fanfare for the Common Man, asserting the universality of the fundamental humanity it celebrates, to inspire international understanding and cooperation.
Heroic leaps soar over broad, open harmonies and bright, colorful runs, responding to Copeland’s Fanfare with new musical ideas to illuminate novel perspectives. Quiet, delicate melodies follow, reminding listeners of the fragility of trust. Finally, bold leaps and soaring melodies return, reaffirming shared humanity as universal.
For Common Purpose was commissioned and premiered by Alexandra Conunova in her solo debut with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra—which commissioned and premiered Fanfare for the Common Man—to honor Cincinnati’s musical heritage.
