Program Notes
Intermezzo for Viola and String Orchestra intertwines new motives and textures with themes from the first four movements of my Symphony No.3 in E Minor: Concert in Three Acts. In this composition, these themes develop concurrently, mutually influencing each other before arriving at a solemn conclusion.
Intermezzo adapts the fifth movement of my symphony for clarinet and string orchestra, originally a chamber composition for Clarinet in A and String Quartet. I created this new version to take advantage of the broader palette of instrumental color which the larger ensemble affords. This version retains the original work’s chordal structures while featuring the greater contrast possible between the clarinet and the expanded string orchestration.
